Mt. Gox Trustee: The Wallet That Haunts Bitcoin

Mt. Gox collapsed in 2014 after losing 850,000 BTC. The bankruptcy trustee recovered roughly 142,000 BTC - worth hundreds of millions initially, and eventually tens of billions.

For a decade, the Mt. Gox trustee wallet became the most watched address in Bitcoin. Every time on-chain watchers detected movement, panic selling ensued. "Mt. Gox is dumping!" became a reflexive fear trigger regardless of whether actual selling was happening.

In 2018, trustee Nobuaki Kobayashi had been selling BTC on open markets rather than distributing directly. Analysis suggested his sales contributed to Bitcoin's decline from $17,000 to $6,000. He reportedly sold over 35,000 BTC worth nearly $400 million at depressed prices. After community backlash, the trustee stopped market-selling.

The actual creditor distribution finally began on July 5, 2024, via Kraken and Bitstamp. The market braced for catastrophic selling. It never materialized. By March 2025, approximately 19,500 of the estimated 24,000 creditors had received distributions - over 107,000 BTC worth roughly $12.3 billion. Most creditors held rather than sold.

But the saga is not over. The estate still holds 34,689 BTC (approximately $4 billion). The repayment deadline has been extended three times - most recently to October 31, 2026. Thousands of creditors remain unpaid due to incomplete paperwork. The wallet that haunted Bitcoin for a decade is still haunting it, just more quietly.

The Aftermath

19,500 of ~24,000 creditors received 107,000+ BTC ($12.3B). 34,689 BTC (~$4B) remain in the estate. Deadline extended to Oct 2026. The decade-long overhang partially resolved - most creditors held rather than sold.
