Your choice

When you first visit CMZ, a banner asks you to Accept or Reject. Until you choose, the site behaves as if you pressed Reject. You can change your mind at any time with the button below.

What we count without storing anything

CMZ has its own simple visit counter. Every time a page opens, it records the page address, the website that sent you (only its name, for example google.com), whether you are on a phone, tablet or computer, and the time. It stores nothing on your device and does not keep your IP address. Search engine bots and link previews are left out. Only the site owner can see these numbers.

Clicks on the adverts on CMZ are counted the same way: which advert, where it sat on the page and which page it was on. Nothing identifies you.

These are kept in your browser's local storage, not sent to anyone else.

cmz_cookie_consent: remembers whether you pressed Accept or Reject, so we do not ask on every page.
Sign-in session (sb-tlbavuirlewaajrazxgz-auth-token): only if you sign in to comment. It keeps you signed in and is removed when you sign out.
cmz_auth_return: only while you sign in with Google or an email link. It remembers which page to bring you back to and is deleted straight after.

Counting returning readers

cmz_vid (local storage): a random number that lets our visit counter tell new readers from returning ones. It contains nothing about you. It is deleted if you later press Reject.
Google Analytics (cookies named _ga and _ga_ followed by an ID): Google's statistics about how the site is used. Before you accept, Google Analytics runs in Google's consent mode and sets no cookies. If you press Reject after accepting, we remove these cookies.
Advertising

No advertising cookies

The adverts on CMZ today are for Cyntri AI, the owner's other business, and set no cookies. If we ever add an advertising network, we will update this page and the banner before it goes live.

Sharing

Share buttons

The share button on stories is a plain link to X. It sets nothing on CMZ. If you click it, X's own cookie policy applies on X.

You can also clear or block cookies and site data in your browser settings:

Clearing site data also signs you out and removes your cookie choice, so the banner will ask again.

If what the site stores changes, we update this page first. The date at the top shows the last change.
